First cataloged VarietyVista doubled die obverse for the 2023-D Lincoln Shield Cent, VDDO-001 presents a medium spread on the lower earlobe of Abraham Lincoln's portrait — a location where the ear's curved geometry can amplify even modest hub displacement into a visible doubled profile. Die stage tracking is still in its early phase, with UVC and DMR codes listed as pending (UVC-????, DMR-00?). Three provisional stages are identified: Stage A in Early Die State remains unconfirmed, Stage B shows a light die crack developing on Lincoln's forehead with the obverse and reverse both reaching Mid-Die State, and Stage C progresses to Late Die State though also unconfirmed. The Stage B die crack on the forehead is diagnostically valuable — it provides a secondary attribution marker that evolves independently of the doubled die effect, allowing collectors to pinpoint their specimen's position in the die's working life. The 2023-D cent is part of the Lincoln Shield series introduced in 2010, featuring Lyndall Bass's Union Shield reverse that replaced the Lincoln Memorial design after it ran from 1959 through 2008.
