Description

This community-submitted 2022 Philadelphia Mint Dr. Sally Ride quarter documents a field-restricted strike-through error designated STT 001. The strike-through appears on the obverse behind Washington's head, where foreign debris adhered to the die surface and prevented full metal flow during striking. The resulting impression shows directional pitting and rough texture within the field, consistent with particulate contamination trapped between die and planchet at the moment of impact. Found through coin roll hunting, this variety represents a production anomaly that escaped Mint quality control. The Dr. Sally Ride quarter was the second release in the American Women Quarter Program (2022-2025), honoring the first American woman in space. The obverse features the Laura Gardin Fraser portrait of Washington introduced for the series, replacing the long-running John Flanagan design. Struck in copper-nickel clad composition, strike-through errors on modern quarters vary widely in visual impact depending on the size and material of the foreign debris. STT 001's field-restricted presentation limits the affected area to a defined zone behind the portrait.
