Description

This 1888 Indian Head Cent displays a strike-through error on the obverse, featuring a greater-than-sign-shaped depression visible west of the letter E in AMERICA. The angular, chevron-like shape of this incuse impression suggests a small piece of rigid material — possibly a metal shaving, wire fragment, or broken tooling debris — became trapped between the obverse die and the planchet during the striking process. When the dies came together under several hundred tons of pressure, the foreign object was pressed into the coin's surface, leaving a permanent impression of its shape before being dislodged or carried away.
