Description
A double clash event on the 1888 Indian Head Cent, this variety documents two separate instances where the dies contacted each other without a planchet, transferring design elements reciprocally in two distinct episodes. The full front of Liberty's portrait clashed twice onto the reverse, creating overlapping transferred impressions from each clash event. Double clashes are less common than single clashes because they require the press to malfunction twice before the die pair is removed, and the two sets of transferred elements can be distinguished by slight positional differences between the first and second clash impressions. The Indian Head Cent, designed by James Barton Longacre and produced from 1859 through 1909, features Liberty wearing a feathered headdress on the obverse and a wreath encircling ONE CENT on the reverse. The double-clashed portrait on the reverse creates a layered diagnostic where two overlapping sets of facial features, headdress elements, and lettering fragments appear superimposed in the wreath area, requiring careful examination to separate the individual clash events. This 1888 Indian Head cent shows a die clash with the full front of Liberty's portrait clashed twice onto the reverse. The double clash indicates that the dies came together without a planchet between them on at least two separate occasions, with each clash event leaving its own set of transfer marks on the reverse die.
