Description
This 1888 Indian Head Cent exhibits a rim cud error positioned at the 10 o'clock position on the obverse, manifesting as a raised, featureless area of metal where a section of the die fractured and broke away along the rim. The cud is located in the upper left area of the obverse near the lettering of UNITED STATES, interrupting the normal rim profile and adjacent design elements in that zone. Cud errors occur when metal fatigue or stress concentrations cause a piece of the die to separate at the rim, creating a void in the die face. When a planchet is subsequently struck between the damaged die and the intact opposing die, the planchet metal flows into the void space, producing the characteristic raised, smooth protrusion on the finished coin. Rim cuds on the obverse of Indian Head Cents are less commonly encountered than those on the reverse, adding numismatic interest to this specimen. The Indian Head Cent was designed by James B. Longacre, with the obverse featuring Liberty wearing a feathered headdress surrounded by the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. The 1888 issue was struck in a composition of 95% copper and 5% tin and zinc (the bronze alloy used from 1864 onward), weighing 3.11 grams with a diameter of 19.05 mm. The 1888 Philadelphia Mint production totaled approximately 37.49 million cents, a substantial mintage that nevertheless makes cud errors scarce as a percentage of total production, since die breaks resulting in cuds are relatively infrequent events in the life cycle of any individual die. The size and definition of the cud, along with its clock position, are the primary factors determining collector premium for this type of error.
