Description

Representing one of the earliest documented error varieties on the 2026 Semiquincentennial circulating coinage, STT 001 records a substantial grease strike-through on the obverse of the Philadelphia-produced Mayflower Compact quarter. This variety was first identified by the Littleton Coin Company, which made specimens available through their retail platform, bringing immediate collector visibility to this new-issue error. The strike-through affects the obverse through the inscription IN GOD WE TRUST and the date, where accumulated grease or other foreign material on the die face prevented full design transfer during the striking process, leaving those areas weakly impressed, partially obscured, or entirely missing on affected coins. Grease strike-throughs occur when lubricant, metallic debris, or other contaminants fill the recessed areas of the die that normally produce raised design elements on the coin, and the resulting struck piece shows smooth or blank zones where the design should appear. The Mayflower Compact quarter is part of the 2026 Semiquincentennial Circulating Coins series commemorating the 250th anniversary of American independence, and its reverse depicts imagery related to the 1620 Mayflower Compact — one of America's foundational governance documents signed by Pilgrims aboard the Mayflower before landing at Plymouth. As a Philadelphia mint issue from a brand-new 2026 design, this strike-through carries particular interest for both error collectors and those assembling complete sets of the Semiquincentennial series with variety representation. The substantial nature of the grease obstruction — spanning both IN GOD WE TRUST and the date area — indicates a significant die contamination event rather than a minor spot blockage, making this a visually dramatic example of the strike-through error class.
