Description

Opening the doubled die reverse catalog for the 2021 Philadelphia Jefferson Nickel, VDDR-001 displays light spread in the South direction as an extra top roof on the central doorway of Monticello. South-direction spread shifts the secondary image downward from the primary, producing a faint doubled edge along the roofline of Thomas Jefferson's Virginia estate. As the first cataloged DDR for this date and mint, VDDR-001 anchors the variety record for 2021-P nickels. Light classification indicates the spread sits close to the primary image and requires attentive magnification to resolve, though Monticello's clean horizontal lines make the doubled roofline distinguishable from normal die wear or strike softness. The 2021 Jefferson Nickel continues the standard 75% copper, 25% nickel composition and the restored Monticello reverse that returned in 2006 following the Westward Journey series. Collectors familiar with the 2014-P VDDR-015 — which shows a North-direction roof spread — will find VDDR-001's South direction an instructive comparison, as the two demonstrate opposite displacement vectors on the same architectural element.
