Description

Cataloged by the Wexler Team as WDDR-003, this doubled die reverse on the 2021-P Jefferson Nickel presents Class VIII Tilted Hub doubling below the right side of Monticello's center door frame. The tilted hub mechanism imparts doubling whose magnitude varies with distance from the pivot axis, and on this variety the displacement appears along the right-hand portion of the door frame where the secondary hub impression left a visible ghost of the architectural detail. Reverse die markers include a die break inside the left arch and a die dot in the lower right side of the first column, both serving as reliable pickup points for attribution. The obverse shows no noted die markers. The 2021-P nickel was produced at Philadelphia in the standard copper-nickel alloy serving the denomination since 1866. This variety continues the documented pattern of Class VIII tilted hub doubling affecting the Monticello center door region across multiple years, with the right-side door frame placement distinguishing WDDR-003 from other tilted hub varieties that concentrate on left or upper portions of the same architectural element.

Die Markers

  • Obverse: None noted.
  • Reverse: Die break inside left arch; die dot in lower right side of first column.
