2021 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-001
ErrorDescription
Holding the premiere catalog position for the 2021-P Jefferson Nickel doubled die reverses, WDDR-001 (Wexler reference: 2021-P WDDR-001) was documented by Charles Hudson and presents Class VIII (Tilted Hub Doubling) focused on Monticello's center entrance architecture. The doubling shows below the left side of the upper portion of the door frame on the center door above the steps — a highly specific architectural diagnostic that places the displaced secondary impression at a defined structural junction in the Monticello design. As WDDR-001, this variety holds foundational status in the 2021-P nickel DDR census: it was either the first variety discovered, the most visually prominent, or both, establishing the baseline against which subsequent 2021-P nickel DDRs are compared. Obverse die markers include a die dot below Jefferson's right eye, while the reverse carries four distinct markers: a pre-die-break depression at the right edge of the building (indicating a stress concentration that may eventually develop into a crack or break), a die dot below the I of FIVE, a die dot to the left of the second A of AMERICA, and a die gouge to the upper right of S in CENTS. This four-marker reverse framework provides robust attribution security. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint in copper-nickel composition (5.0 grams, 21.21 mm diameter), the 2021-P nickel continues the Return to Monticello reverse, and WDDR-001 documents the first confirmed hub doubling event from that year's die population, with the pre-die-break depression adding an unusual structural-stress marker to the diagnostic toolkit.
