2021 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-011
ErrorDescription
This 2021 Philadelphia Mint Jefferson Nickel carries the WDDR-011 doubled die reverse, classified as Class VIII Tilted Hub Doubling. The doubling appears on the upper right side of the door frame on the center door above the steps of Monticello. Die markers on the obverse include a die chip in the hair below the ear and a die gouge to the right of the I in LIBERTY. On the reverse, a die gouge is visible above the right arch near the roof line. Attributed by Daniel McGlew. Class VIII doubling results from the hub being tilted at a slight angle relative to the die during the impression process, producing doubling that varies in strength across the design rather than showing uniform displacement. The 2021 Jefferson Nickel retains the traditional Monticello reverse, and the door frame above the central steps provides sufficient fine detail to reveal this tilted hub effect clearly under magnification.
