Description

Cataloged by the Wexler Team under Wexler Variety ID 2018 1¢ WDDR-005, this Lincoln Shield Cent doubled die reverse shows doubling on the upper right side of the third raised vertical stripe on the shield below the B of PLURIBUS. The Union Shield reverse, introduced in 2010 to replace the Lincoln Memorial design, features thirteen vertical stripes overlaid by a horizontal banner reading E PLURIBUS UNUM — a design rich in fine parallel lines that make even subtle hub doubling detectable under magnification. Die markers on the obverse include die scratches extending northeast around Lincoln's lips, while the reverse shows small die chips above the left side of the shield. The Shield design represented a return to symbolic imagery after nearly fifty years of the Memorial reverse, and its geometric precision has proven useful for doubled die attribution since minor displacement on tightly spaced stripes is readily apparent. Five documented doubled die reverses for the 2018 Shield Cent is a modest count consistent with modern hub technology that minimizes but does not eliminate doubling. No additional cross-references beyond the Wexler catalog are published.
