2017 Variety WWHO-001

Description

Unlike the vast majority of doubled die varieties, which trace to a single working die receiving misaligned hubbing, WWHO-001 on the 2017 Lincoln Shield Cent originated at the working hub level — the doubling was impressed into the hub itself and then transferred to every working die produced from it. The Wexler Team determined that eight previously listed doubled die obverse varieties (WDDO-004, WDDO-006, WDDO-007, WDDO-008, WDDO-010, WDDO-013, WDDO-014, and WDDO-015) all shared the same hub-level doubling and consolidated them under WWHO-001, cataloged as Wexler Variety ID 2017-P 1¢ WWHO-001. The doubling presents as moderate extra thickness on the letters of LIBERTY, with the upper left of the Y considerably thicker than the upper right. Because the source is the hub rather than an individual die, die markers on both obverse and reverse will vary among the different working dies that inherited this doubling, making attribution dependent on recognizing the shared hub characteristic rather than die-specific diagnostics. This consolidation illustrates a key principle: when multiple dies exhibit identical doubling, the source must be traced upstream to the hub.
