Description

Initiating the cud catalog for the 2017 Philadelphia Mint Lincoln Shield Cent, CU-1C-2017P-01 documents the first recorded die rim failure for this date. Without the "R" suffix, this cud occurred on the obverse die — the side bearing Victor David Brenner's portrait of Abraham Lincoln, in continuous production since 1909. Obverse cuds on Lincoln Cents affect portions of the design that may include the rim near LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, the date, or Lincoln's portrait depending on the fracture position. The cud itself forms when a section of the die rim breaks away entirely, and the resulting cavity fills with metal during striking to produce a raised featureless mass.
