2017 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-009
ErrorDescription
Attributed under the Wexler designation 2017-P 1¢ WDDO-009, this Lincoln Shield Cent variety shows moderate extra thickness on the LIBERTY letters. The upper left of the Y appears noticeably thicker than the upper right, and notching is visible along the bottom of the letters E, R, T, and Y — a serrated appearance caused by overlapping hub impressions that did not fully align. On the obverse, a die gouge sits to the right of center of the numeral 1 in the date, serving as a reliable die-specific attribution marker. The Lincoln Shield Cent series, introduced in 2010, uses the same Victor David Brenner obverse portrait that has appeared on Lincoln cents since 1909, and LIBERTY remains one of the most productive areas for detecting doubled dies on this denomination. The notching pattern on WDDO-009 is characteristic of slight rotational or lateral hub misalignment, where the second impression partially overlaps the first, creating a stepped edge along letter serifs and terminals.
