2016 Atypical Die Clash ADC-5C-2016-01
Error
Description
Found by Michael Rusk, this first documented atypical die clash for the 2016-P Jefferson Nickel presents a striking visual effect where clashed eyes from the obverse portrait stare out from beneath the Monticello building on the reverse. Unlike typical die clashes where only faint impressions transfer between dies, atypical die clashes involve more dramatic or unusual transfer patterns that create visually distinctive anomalies. On this 2016-P nickel, the newer forward-facing portrait of Jefferson — introduced as part of the 2006 Return to Monticello redesign by Jamie Franki — clashed into the reverse die with sufficient force to leave recognizable facial features, particularly the eyes, visible beneath the architectural rendering of Monticello. Corresponding detail from the reverse also transferred into the obverse die, creating clashed impressions on Jefferson's face. The ADC-5c-2016P-01 designation in the MadDieClashes catalog system identifies this as the first atypical die clash documented for the 2016 Philadelphia Mint nickel. Atypical die clashes are distinguished from typical clashes by the nature of the transferred detail — they may involve unusual die-to-die contact angles, multiple clash events on the same die, or particularly vivid design transfer that creates recognizable imagery rather than mere abstract lines. Cataloged by MadDieClashes, the premier reference for die clash varieties on United States coinage, this variety demonstrates the distinctive clash patterns that the forward-facing Jefferson portrait produces compared to earlier profile designs.
