Description

Among the subtler doubled die reverses in the Jefferson Nickel series, WDDR-009 exhibits Class VIII Tilted Hub Doubling on the 2016 Philadelphia Mint issue. The doubling appears below the left side of the upper door frame on the center door above the steps of Monticello, where the tilted hub produced a localized secondary image. Class VIII doubling results from the working hub being angled slightly during the hubbing process, creating displacement confined to a narrow zone rather than the broader spread of rotated hub classes. Two small die dots on the reverse aid identification: one above the second O in MONTICELLO and another above the C. These die dots reliably distinguish this die pair from other documented doubled die reverses on the 2016 nickel. No obverse die markers have been noted. Collectors should examine the Monticello doorway area under moderate magnification, as the displacement is subtle.

Die Markers

  • Obverse: None noted.
  • Reverse: Small die dot above second O of MONTICELLO; small die dot above C of MONTICELLO.
