2016 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-003

Description

Affecting the architectural detail of Monticello — Thomas Jefferson's Virginia estate that has served as the Jefferson Nickel's reverse design since 1938 — this 2016 Philadelphia Mint doubled die reverse shows close Class VIII Tilted Hub Doubling below the upper portion of the door frame on the center door above the steps. Class VIII doubling results from a slight tilt between hub and die during hubbing, producing a spread that varies in intensity depending on distance from the tilt axis. The center door is a focal point of the reverse, and doubling here alters one of the building's most prominent features — the doorway that anchors the viewer's eye between the portico columns. Die markers on the reverse provide attribution anchors: a die gouge to the upper right of the first O in MONTICELLO, and small die gouges above and below the second O. No significant obverse die markers have been noted. The 2016 Jefferson Nickel continues the Felix Schlag obverse portrait paired with the restored Monticello reverse that returned in 2006 after the Westward Journey series. Cataloged as WDDR-003.
