Description

Moderate extra thickness on LIBERTY with notching visible at the top of the Y marks WDDO-001 as the primary doubled die obverse for the 2016 Philadelphia Harpers Ferry National Park Quarter. Attributed by the Wexler Team with variety ID 2016-P 25¢ WV WDDO-001, the obverse carries diagnostic die chips at the base of Washington's bust north of the E in QUARTER and the D in DOLLAR, while no significant reverse markers have been noted. The notching at the top of the Y — small steps or shelves where the doubled image overlaps the primary letter — provides a specific focal point for attribution. As the first documented DDO for this date, WDDO-001 was likely among the earliest varieties identified by researchers examining the Harpers Ferry issue. Harpers Ferry National Historical Park in West Virginia commemorates the site of John Brown's 1859 raid, and the quarter's reverse depicts the historic town's armory building, designed by Thomas Hipschen.
