Description

First documented rim cud for the 2016 Philadelphia Mint Harpers Ferry National Historical Park Quarter, CU-25c-2016P-01(HF) records a major die break where a piece of the die rim fractured and separated, leaving a cavity that filled with metal during striking to produce a raised featureless mass at the coin’s edge. Rim cuds are among the most visually dramatic die errors because the featureless blob contrasts sharply with the surrounding design detail, and on America the Beautiful Quarters the relatively large diameter makes cuds particularly prominent. The Harpers Ferry design depicts the historic armory site in West Virginia with a view of the confluence of the Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers, and a rim cud on this scenic design creates a striking juxtaposition of natural beauty and industrial die failure. Cataloged by Cuds on Coins as the first of three documented cuds for this date, the -01 sequence number establishes this as either the earliest discovered or most significant example. The America the Beautiful Quarter program (2010–2021) generated extensive cud documentation due to the high production volumes and active error coin community monitoring each new release.
