Description

Cataloged by Trail Dies, this 2013-P Jefferson Nickel from the Philadelphia Mint features a major trail die reverse discovered across two stages. Die markers: Stage A with obverse at MDS and no markers noted, reverse at MDS and no markers noted; Stage B with obverse at LDS and die chips in the letters E and T of LIBERTY, reverse at LDS with a die chip and die crack on the right upper corner of the Monticello building and another die crack under the designer's initials to the rim. This trail die (Stage B) is considered a major variety and was found by George dePozsgay, while Stage A was found by Jim Karnes. Trail die errors result from partial contact between die faces during press operation. Struck in 75% copper and 25% nickel at 5.0 grams and 21.21 mm, this variety comes from the Return to Monticello series that began in 2006.
