Description

VarietyVista's second cataloged doubled die reverse for a 2013 America the Beautiful quarter exhibits a medium spread in the south direction on the upper right branches and leaves. Cataloged under UVC-2103 and DMR-003, the die progressed through Stage A at early die state (unconfirmed), Stage B with both the reverse and obverse at mid-die state, and Stage C at late die state (unconfirmed). The southward spread direction contrasts with the eastward spread seen on DDR-001 for the same design, confirming these are products of two entirely different dies that each experienced hub misalignment in distinct directions. Medium spread on branches and leaves of the design indicates hub offset sufficient to create a visible secondary image of the botanical elements, which are among the most diagnostic features for doubled die detection on designs incorporating natural foliage. The America the Beautiful quarter program honored national parks and historic sites with five new designs per year, and the detailed scenic reverses provided abundant fine detail where doubling becomes apparent. Two documented doubled die reverses for this 2013 quarter design, each with different spread directions, illustrates how hubbing errors are independent events — each working die's misalignment during hubbing is random, producing unique doubling characteristics on every affected die.
