2013 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-005
ErrorDescription
Sharing the same general diagnostic description as its companion WDDR-006, the 2013-P Great Basin National Park quarter WDDR-005 displays an eastward spread on the leaves of the Bristlecone pine tree's bottom right branch. The Bristlecone pine design, depicting one of Earth's oldest known living organisms found in Great Basin National Park in eastern Nevada, features intricate branch detail that serves as a sensitive indicator of hub doubling. The Wexler Team cataloged this as Wexler Variety ID: 2013-P 25 cent NV WDDR-005, noting no significant die markers on either obverse or reverse. While the affected design zone matches WDDR-006, the two varieties originate from different working dies that each received their own misaligned secondary hub impression, producing distinct doubling characteristics that careful examination under magnification can differentiate. The America the Beautiful quarter program (2010-2021) generated five new reverse designs annually, each with its own die variety census that attracted variety specialists from the broader Washington quarter collecting community. Great Basin National Park, established in 1986 in White Pine County, Nevada, was the seventeenth park honored in the ATB series. Philadelphia's substantial business-strike production for the ATB program means these quarters entered circulation in large numbers, giving cherry-pickers ample opportunity to search circulation finds for die varieties. WDDR-005 and WDDR-006 together demonstrate that the bottom right branch area was particularly susceptible to displaying hub doubling effects on this specific reverse design.
