2013 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-004

Description

Targeting the Bristlecone pine tree — one of the oldest living organisms on Earth, with specimens exceeding 5,000 years — this Wexler-attributed 2013-P Great Basin National Park Quarter WDDR-004 shows a spread to the west on the trunk and the leaves above it. The westward displacement means the secondary hub impression sits to the left of the primary in standard orientation, producing doubled contours along the trunk's vertical lines and foliage canopy. Great Basin National Park in Nevada (NV in the Wexler cross-reference "2013-P 25¢ NV WDDR-004") features the ancient Bristlecone pine on its America the Beautiful reverse. The obverse is noted as late die state, while no significant die markers have been documented beyond the doubling. John Flanagan's George Washington portrait appears on this Philadelphia Mint regular strike in copper-nickel clad composition. The natural vertical grain of the pine trunk and the detailed leaf canopy provide excellent surfaces for detecting directional doubling — examine the trunk's western edge and the leaves above under magnification for the westward displacement.
