Description

Found by Tanaka (Mikee) Davis, this 2012 Philadelphia Mint Jefferson Nickel trail die reverse variety is documented at Stage B with both sides at mid-die-state. The obverse carries a die chip on the L of LIBERTY, where material has broken away from the die surface to leave a raised bump on struck coins. On the reverse, a small die gouge appears to the left and below the O in OF, providing the primary reverse identification marker. Trail die varieties occur when a working die retains partial impressions from an earlier hubbing event, and these residual design traces transfer onto struck coins as faint secondary images. The mid-die-state condition suggests the die was in the middle of its production life when these diagnostic features were present. The Jefferson Nickel series, featuring Felix Schlag's portrait on the obverse paired with the return-to-Monticello reverse design restored in 2006 after the Westward Journey commemoratives, provides the canvas for this trail die variety from the 2012 Philadelphia production run.
