2012 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-003

Description

Attributed by Allen Darrow and cataloged under Wexler Variety ID 2012-P WDDR-003, this Jefferson Nickel doubled die reverse exhibits Class VIII tilted hub doubling — one of the less common doubling mechanisms where the hub is slightly tilted relative to the die during hubbing, producing a rotational spread rather than a simple lateral or vertical shift. The Class VIII doubling manifests below the upper portion of the door frame on the center door above the steps of Monticello, Thomas Jefferson's Virginia estate that has appeared on the nickel's reverse since Felix Schlag's original 1938 design. Reverse die markers include a die gouge in the field to the right of the upper portion of the building's roof and a short die scratch in the field just above the top of the dome. No obverse die markers have been noted. The Monticello door frame area is a frequent location for Class VIII doubling on Jefferson Nickels because the architectural detail sits near the rotational axis where tilted hub effects become most apparent. The 2012-P issue belongs to the Jefferson Nickels series in its original design configuration.
