2012 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-004

Description

Discovered by Jessy Gozum, this 2012 Philadelphia Mint Jefferson Nickel exhibits Class VIII Tilted Hub Doubling visible below the upper left portion of the door frame on the center door above the steps of Monticello. Class VIII doubling results from the hub being tilted relative to the die face during impression, producing displacement that varies in intensity depending on distance from the tilt axis. The center door area of Thomas Jefferson's Virginia estate is particularly sensitive to this displacement because the architectural detail in the doorframe and steps provides fine reference lines against which even slight tilting becomes apparent. Die markers further identify this die: a die break or depression just to the left of the building, and a die chip inside the second O of MONTICELLO on the reverse. Cross-referenced as Wexler Variety ID 2012-P WDDR-004, this variety adds Gozum's name to the roster of attributors expanding the Jefferson Nickel doubled die census. The Monticello reverse, restored in 2006 after a five-year hiatus for the Westward Journey series, has continued to produce new doubled die discoveries as collectors apply modern imaging to current-year production.
