2012 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-001

Description

Submitted by John J. Starner under Wexler Variety ID 2012-P WDDR-001, this Philadelphia Jefferson nickel carries a Class VIII tilted hub doubled die reverse showing doubling below the upper portion of the door frame on the center door above the steps of Monticello. Two die states are documented on both sides. Obverse Stage A shows a die dot on Jefferson's nose and a short die gouge extending from the bottom of I in IN. Stage B retains those markers without change. Reverse Stage A reveals a die gouge above the first A of AMERICA and a small die dot between N and T of CENTS. Stage B maintains Stage A markers and adds a die chip inside the lower portion of the second S of PLURIBUS and a die chip in the lower right corner of the left arch. Class VIII tilted hub doubling occurs when the hub contacts the die at a slight angle during the hubbing process, producing doubling concentrated in one area of the design. The door frame doubling is subtle and requires examination above the center steps, but the progressive reverse die chips from Stage A to B provide sequencing confirmation.
