Description

Found by Tanaka (Mikee) Davis, this 2012 Philadelphia Mint Jefferson Nickel shows trail die characteristics on the reverse. Cataloged by Trail Dies at Stage C (LDS): a small die dot under the mintmark on the obverse; a die crack from the right base of Monticello to the rim and another on the left edge of the building extending into the field on the reverse. The dual reverse cracks emanating from Monticello's structure document significant late-life failure in areas where deep relief creates high stress during striking. At 75% copper and 25% nickel, 5.0 grams and 21.21 mm, the 2012-P features Franki's updated obverse paired with the Return to Monticello reverse. Trail die varieties occur when slight hubbing displacement leaves faint ghost lines near primary design elements.

Die Markers

  • Stage “C“, obverse is LDS – a small die dot is seen under the mintmark.
  • Reverse is LDS – a die crack is seen from the right base of Monticello to the rim. Another die crack is seen on the left edge of the building and in the field.
