2011P-1DEO-011T Trail Die Obverse

Description

Attributed to discoverer Frank Baumann, this 2011-P Lincoln Shield Cent trail die obverse presents trails off the tops of the LIBERTY letters, with characteristics similar to the related variety 1DEO-015T. The offset angle is approximately 355 degrees — nearly aligned with the normal strike axis but with a slight clockwise deviation. At Stage B (mid-die state), the obverse shows a crack running through the upper hair of Lincoln's portrait, while the reverse displays a die break on the upper left edge of the shield. Distinctive scratches through UNITED on the reverse provide an additional attribution marker. The near-zero offset angle on 1DEO-011T distinguishes it from most trail die varieties, which typically show larger angular displacements. Trail die errors on the Shield Cent series are documented in growing numbers as the modern zinc-core planchets and high-speed presses create conditions conducive to secondary die impressions during the coining process.
