2011 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-004

Description

Moderate extra thickness on the letters of LIBERTY defines this 2011 Lincoln Shield Cent doubled die obverse, attributed by the Wexler Team and cross-referenced as Crawford CDDO-011 and Wexler 2011 1-cent WDDO-004. The Shield Cent reverse, introduced in 2010 to replace the four rotating Bicentennial designs of 2009, features a Union shield motif that has continued through the present day. Die markers on the obverse include two light parallel die scratches running southwest from the bottom of the back of Lincoln's head, providing a reliable confirmation point for isolating the correct die. On the reverse, two short die scratches run north from the top left and top right of the E in AMERICA, offering secondary authentication from the opposite side of the coin. The moderate classification indicates the extra thickness on LIBERTY is visible under standard magnification, with the thickened letterforms resulting from a secondary hub impression that overlapped the primary closely enough to widen the strokes without producing fully separated secondary images. These dual-side die markers strengthen attribution confidence for a variety where the doubling itself concentrates on a single word.
