Description

This Position B Philadelphia Mint Presidential Dollar shows directional trail lines from the letters of JAMES GARFIELD at 315 degrees offset, with the reverse also carrying trails listed as 2011(JG)-100DER-001T. Found by Cal Goodard, the Position B designation indicates the opposite die orientation relative to edge lettering compared to Position A. Die markers at Stage B: obverse at MDS with a small die crack from the left brow into the field, another from the hair wave under M of JAMES, and dimples from the bottom of JAMES GARFIELD letters; reverse at MDS with none noted. Trail die varieties arise from partial contact between die faces during press operation. Struck in manganese brass clad at 8.1 grams and 26.5 mm, the James Garfield dollar honors the 20th President who served only 200 days before his assassination in 1881.

Die Markers

  • Reverse is MDS – none noted.
