2010 Atypical Die Clash ADC-5C-2010-01
Error
Description
Documented by MadDieClashes as ADC-5C-2010-01, this atypical die clash variety on the 2010 Jefferson Nickel from the Philadelphia Mint records an irregular clash event during production of the Return to Monticello design. Standard die clashes leave symmetrical, centered traces of opposing die elements, but atypical clashes depart from this pattern — the dies may have contacted at an angle, with partial overlap, or under irregular press conditions that positioned the transferred design elements in unexpected locations. The 2010 Jefferson Nickel pairs Jamie Franki's forward-facing portrait of Jefferson with Felix Schlag's Monticello reverse, and clashes between these two designs can produce ghostly architectural traces on the obverse or phantom portrait elements on the reverse, depending on which die retained the transferred impressions. Atypical die clash varieties are less commonly collected than doubled dies or repunched mint marks, but they appeal to a dedicated niche of die variety specialists who study the mechanics of die contact and the conditions under which non-standard clashes occur. The ADC cataloging system maintained by MadDieClashes provides a systematic framework for documenting these varieties across all denominations and dates.
