2010 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-001
ErrorDescription
Allen Darrow attributed this Class VIII Tilted Hub Doubling on the 2010-P Jefferson nickel, where the hub tilt produces visible displacement below the upper portion of the center door frame on Monticello, directly above the steps. As the first cataloged WDDR for the 2010-P date, this variety establishes the baseline for Class VIII doubling on the Return to Monticello design that debuted in 2006 with Jamie Franki's updated rendition of Jefferson's Virginia estate. The obverse carries a distinctive die dot on Jefferson's cheek to the right of his ear, while the reverse shows two small die dots to the upper right of the E in FIVE and a single small die dot to the lower left of the O in OF. Philadelphia's 2010 nickel production of approximately 260 million pieces was a moderate output year, and Darrow's discovery of Class VIII doubling on this date aligns with a pattern seen across multiple years of the Return to Monticello series, where the architectural door frame geometry consistently reveals hub tilt. The Monticello design's straight horizontal and vertical lines in the door frame area serve as natural reference grids that make even slight tilting visible — an attribute that has made the Jefferson nickel reverse one of the most productive denominations for Class VIII documentation.
