2010D-1DEO-003T Trail Die Obverse

Description

Found by Albert Neils Sr., the 2010D-1DEO-003T is a trail die obverse variety on the Lincoln Shield cent, the design that replaced the Lincoln Memorial reverse beginning in 2010. This Stage B specimen was struck at the Denver Mint, with the obverse at mid-die-state showing no distinctive die markers of its own. The reverse, also at mid-die-state, displays a die chip on the left upper edge of the Union Shield, providing a reliable diagnostic for attribution. The Lincoln Shield cent introduced a heraldic design featuring a shield with a scroll bearing ONE CENT across its face, symbolizing Lincoln's preservation of the Union during the Civil War. Trail die varieties from the Shield cent's inaugural year are particularly noteworthy, as the Mint was working with new dies cut from freshly prepared hubs for the redesigned reverse. Collectors examining 2010-D Shield cents should look for the reverse die chip as the key identifier for this variety.
