Description

Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 2009-P 25-cent PR WDDO-003, this DC and US Territories Quarter doubled die obverse was discovered on the Puerto Rico design and shows a partial extra earlobe just under Washington's ear. The DC and US Territories Quarters program in 2009 extended the State Quarters concept to honor the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa, the US Virgin Islands, and the Northern Mariana Islands. The quarter was struck at the Philadelphia Mint in cupronickel-clad copper at 5.67 grams and 24.3 mm diameter. No other cross-references are known beyond the Wexler designation. The partial extra earlobe diagnostic, located beneath Washington's ear on the Flanagan obverse design, indicates hub doubling affected the fine detail area of the portrait. Obverse die markers include a die crack across the front tip of the bust, a die gouge near the bust above the T in QUARTER, a weak die gouge left of the first A in AMERICA, and a small die gouge right of the R in TRUST. On the reverse, die gouges appear near the cloud below the P in PUERTO, to the right of the L in ISLA, and multiple die gouges between the D in DEL and the C in ENCANTO. The Puerto Rico reverse, designed by Joseph Menna, features a sentry box from the historic San Juan fortification and a coqui tree frog, with the inscription ISLA DEL ENCANTO (Island of Enchantment).
