2009 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-005
Error
Description
Attributed by the Wexler Team and cross-referenced as 2009-P 25-cent San Francisco Old Mint Proof WDDR-005, this DC & US Territories Quarter variety features doubling on the upper right side of the turret below the cloud, just to the right of the turret element on the reverse depicting the historic San Francisco Old Mint building — one of the five 2009 quarter designs honoring the District of Columbia and U.S. territories under the program that continued the rotating-reverse quarter tradition established by the State Quarters series. The doubling's location on a small architectural detail of the turret requires careful examination under magnification, as the secondary impression is confined to a limited area of the design rather than spanning broad inscriptions. Obverse die markers provide robust attribution support: a short die scratch running from WSW to ENE positioned a little northeast of the first T in STATES, a die crack running through the upper portion of the designer's initials, and a short die crack near the front point of the base of the bust — three geographically distributed markers that collectively fingerprint this specific obverse working die. The reverse carries no significant die markers beyond the doubling itself, concentrating all diagnostic weight on the turret area and the obverse checkpoints. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint in copper-nickel clad composition (91.67% copper / 8.33% nickel bonded to a pure copper core) at 5.67 grams, the 2009-P DC & US Territories quarters had comparatively lower mintages than earlier State Quarter issues as the program wound toward its conclusion. The absence of known cross-references beyond the Wexler listing suggests this variety has not been independently cataloged by CONECA or other attribution services.
