Description

Sharing the 100DEO-001T catalog code with its Position A counterpart, this 2008 Philadelphia Mint Martin Van Buren Presidential Dollar trail die obverse was struck in Position B edge lettering orientation. The die pair exhibits Stage A early die state on both sides, with the obverse showing a small die dot on Monroe's forehead — the same marker documented on the Position A specimen, confirming both edge lettering variants originate from the same obverse die. No reverse die markers have been noted. Position B indicates that the incused edge lettering reads in a specific orientation when the obverse faces up, a distinction important to Presidential Dollar collectors as the series generated both position variants from standard production. The edge lettering on Presidential Dollars — containing the date, mint mark, and E PLURIBUS UNUM — was applied in a post-striking process separate from the main coinage operation. Trail die varieties document progressive die deterioration, and finding the same trail die feature across both edge lettering positions demonstrates that both variants were produced from the same die pair during its service life.
