Description

Attributed by the Wexler Team as 2008-P $1 JQA WDDO-002, this doubled die obverse variety was struck on a 2008-P Presidential dollar honoring John Quincy Adams in the Position A edge lettering orientation. Presidential dollars were struck in manganese-brass clad composition weighing 8.1 grams with a 26.5 mm diameter, featuring edge-incused lettering that includes the date, mintmark, and motto E PLURIBUS UNUM. John Quincy Adams, honored as the sixth President, is notable in American history as both the son of a president and a figure who later served in the House of Representatives after his presidency, the only former president to do so. The Position A designation distinguishes this variety from the same die variety found with Position B edge lettering. When Presidential dollars were struck, the edge lettering was applied in a separate operation after the obverse and reverse were struck, and the coin could be oriented either way when fed into the edge-lettering machine, producing two possible edge orientations relative to the obverse design. The doubling on WDDO-002 resulted from misalignment during the die hubbing process, where the hub and die were not perfectly aligned between successive hubbing impressions, creating doubled design elements on the obverse portrait. No cross-references to other attribution services have been recorded for this variety. The Presidential dollar program ran from 2007 through 2016 for circulation issues and continued through 2020 for collector editions, issuing four presidents per year. Among Presidential dollar varieties, doubled die obverses on the portrait side are particularly sought after because the detailed facial features and hair of each president's likeness provide clear reference points where doubling becomes visible under magnification, and the Adams portrait with its distinctive sideburns and formal attire offers multiple areas for diagnostic examination.
