2008 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-012
ErrorDescription
Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 2008-P $1 JQA WDDR-012, this Presidential Dollar features a doubled die reverse on the John Quincy Adams issue, with slight doubling visible on the right arm of the Statue of Liberty just above the sleeve of the robe and at the intersection of the second ray clockwise from the head and the right arm. The doubling's concentration at the arm-sleeve junction and the ray-arm intersection demonstrates how hub displacement interacts differently with design elements at various angles and relief depths, producing visible separation only where the geometry amplifies the offset's effect. No cross-references to other cataloging systems are currently known. Obverse die markers include a small die gouge dot to the right of the bottom of John Quincy Adams's hair. Reverse markers feature a short die scratch running northwest-to-southeast above and to the right of the intersection of the second ray and the right arm of the Statue of Liberty — positioned conveniently near the doubling itself, aiding field confirmation. The Presidential Dollar series, authorized by the Presidential $1 Coin Act of 2005, features a rotating succession of presidential portraits on the obverse with a common Statue of Liberty reverse designed by Don Everhart. The 2008-P John Quincy Adams dollar was struck at the Philadelphia Mint in manganese brass clad composition (outer layer of 77% copper, 12% zinc, 7% manganese, 4% nickel over a copper core) weighing 8.1 grams with a diameter of 26.5 mm and a plain edge with incused edge lettering. The Statue of Liberty reverse, with its flowing robe, radiating rays, and raised torch, provides complex curved surfaces where even subtle hub displacement can produce diagnostically significant doubled die manifestations.
