2008 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-007

Description

Completing the four-coin matrix of mint and edge combinations, this 2008-P John Quincy Adams Presidential dollar WDDR-007 features Position B edge lettering from the Philadelphia Mint. Position B indicates the edge inscription reads inverted when the obverse faces up, the result of the coin entering the edge-lettering machine in the opposite orientation from Position A specimens. The reverse doubling remains consistent with all WDDR-007 examples: visible spread at the intersection of the second ray clockwise from Liberty's head and her right arm. Obverse die markers include a die gouge to the left of the bottom of "two" in the date 1829, while the reverse shows a die gouge above the D in the designer's initials DE. Presidential dollar edge lettering varieties became a significant collecting category when the series launched in 2007, as the three-step striking process — obverse/reverse, then edge lettering — introduced a variable absent from all other modern U.S. denominations. This Position B Philadelphia specimen is the fourth and final permutation of the WDDR-007 die variety across the two mints and two edge orientations.
