Description

Listed by the Wexler Team as 2008-P $1 JQA WDDR-009, this Presidential Dollar features the portrait of John Quincy Adams, the sixth president of the United States, and exhibits slight doubling on the right arm of the Statue of Liberty just above the sleeve of the robe on the common reverse design shared by all Presidential Dollar issues. The slight doubling in this location — where Liberty's raised torch-bearing arm meets the flowing drapery of her robe — is consistent with a minor hub displacement that primarily affected the transitional zone between two design elements of different relief heights. Obverse die markers for the Adams portrait side include a small die gouge north of the 6 in "6th" (denoting Adams as the 6th president), a small die gouge to the left of the P in PRESIDENT, and a small die gouge to the right of the bottom of the 2 in 1825 (the year Adams's presidency began). The reverse carries a small die gouge appearing as a dot inside the lower N of UNITED. No cross-references to other cataloging systems are currently known. The Presidential Dollar series, authorized by the Presidential $1 Coin Act of 2005, features rotating obverse designs honoring each U.S. president in order of service, with a common Statue of Liberty reverse designed by Don Everhart. Struck at the Denver Mint in manganese brass clad composition, these dollars weigh 8.10 grams with a diameter of 26.5 mm and a smooth edge bearing the date, mintmark, and motto. The John Quincy Adams issue of 2008 represents the second year of this series, and doubled die varieties on Presidential Dollars are cataloged across both the unique obverse portraits and the shared reverse design. The spatial distribution of three die gouges across different obverse inscription elements provides a reliable multi-point attribution framework.
