2008 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-008

Description

Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 2008-D $1 JQA WDDR-008, this Presidential Dollar doubled die reverse shows slight doubling on the right arm of the Statue of Liberty just above the sleeve of the robe on the common reverse designed by Don Everhart. The Presidential Dollar series (2007-2016) was struck in manganese brass clad over a copper core at 8.10 grams and 26.5 mm diameter, with a plain edge bearing incuse inscriptions of the date, mintmark, and E PLURIBUS UNUM. This particular variety appears on the John Quincy Adams issue, the sixth president honored in the series. Die markers on the obverse include a small die gouge (dot) to the right of the center of the J in JOHN. The reverse markers include a small die gouge on the upper right of the tablet held by the Statue of Liberty and a die chip on the upper serif of the dollar sign. No other cross-references are known beyond the Wexler designation. The doubling location on the Statue of Liberty's arm requires careful examination, as the sleeve detail where the doubling manifests is a subtle area that can be confused with strike artifacts or die wear.
