Description

Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 2008-D $1 JQA WDDR-009, this Presidential Dollar honoring John Quincy Adams displays slight doubling on the right arm of the Statue of Liberty just above the sleeve of the robe on the common reverse design used for the Presidential Dollar series. Obverse die markers include a small die gouge north of the 6 in "6th" (Adams was the 6th President), a small die gouge to the left of the P in PRESIDENT, and a small die gouge to the right of the bottom of the 2 in 1825 (his inauguration year). The reverse carries a small die gouge (dot) inside the lower N of UNITED. No other cross-references are currently known. The Presidential Dollar series, launched in 2007 under the Presidential $1 Coin Act of 2005, features rotating obverse designs honoring each deceased President in chronological order, with Don Everhart's common Statue of Liberty reverse shared across the entire series. The 2008-D John Quincy Adams dollar was struck at the Denver Mint in manganese brass composition (88.5% copper, 6% zinc, 3.5% manganese, 2% nickel), weighing 8.1 grams at 26.5 mm diameter with a lettered edge bearing the date, mintmark, and motto. The slight doubling on the Statue of Liberty's right arm sleeve represents a subtle but diagnostically specific attribution target, requiring 10x or higher magnification to confirm the secondary impression above the robe sleeve boundary.
