2007 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-001

Description

Holding the primary catalog position for the 2007 Utah State Quarter, DDR-001 displays light spread in the West direction from the lower left spike edge on the reverse design. The Utah quarter depicts the ceremonial golden spike driven at Promontory Summit in 1869 to mark the completion of the first transcontinental railroad, with two locomotives flanking the spike — and it is along the lower left edge of this central spike element that the westward hub displacement becomes visible. Light spread indicates the secondary image sits close to the primary, requiring magnification to resolve. Die markers UVC-1970 and DMR-003 anchor the attribution within the VarietyVista system. Stage A documents the variety in Early Die State, while Stage B captures the reverse at Mid Die State with a die chip developing on the front of the bust on the obverse, showing how the die pair evolved through continued service. As DDR-001, this variety establishes the benchmark entry for Utah quarter doubled die reverses, the first discovery against which subsequent finds for this design are compared and cataloged.
