Description

Attributed by the Wexler Team as 2007-P 10¢ WDDR-001, this Roosevelt Clad Dime exhibits doubling on the right side of the center olive leaf positioned north of the RIB in PLURIBUS — a subtle but diagnostically precise doubling feature located within the botanical design elements of the reverse wreath. The specificity of the doubled element — affecting only one leaf within the intricate arrangement of olive and oak branches — demonstrates how hub displacement along certain vectors can produce visible doubling on selected design features while leaving adjacent elements apparently unaffected, depending on each element's orientation and relief relative to the displacement direction. Obverse die markers include a short strong die scratch running west-to-east through the L in LIBERTY, plus die chips on the back of Roosevelt's lips and on the upper chin. Reverse markers are equally detailed: a die chip on the upper L in PLURIBUS, a die chip on the tip of the olive leaf south of the T in UNITED, and die chips on the oak branch between the U and N in UNUM. No cross-references to other cataloging systems are currently known. The 2007 Roosevelt Dime was struck at the Philadelphia Mint in copper-nickel clad composition weighing 2.27 grams with a diameter of 17.9 mm. John R. Sinnock designed the obverse portrait of Franklin D. Roosevelt, introduced in 1946 to honor the late president's association with the March of Dimes. As the first cataloged doubled die reverse (WDDR-001) for the 2007-P date, this variety holds the primary position within its date-mint DDR family, suggesting it was either the first documented or the most prominent DDR known for this issue. The lip and chin die chips on the obverse provide quick field-identification markers that can be checked before examining the reverse for the doubled leaf.
