SHD-10c-2007P-01 Shattered Die
Error
Description
Representing the most extreme form of die deterioration, this shattered die variety on the 2007-P Roosevelt Dime preserves the evidence of a die that fractured into multiple pieces yet continued to produce coins before being retired from service. Unlike isolated die cracks or single cud breaks, a shattered die exhibits an interconnected network of cracks spanning large portions of the die face, resulting in a web-like pattern of raised lines across the struck coin's surface. Cataloged by Cuds on Coins as SHD-10c-2007P-01, this specimen also features a retained interior die break — a separate but related form of die damage where a section of the die face cracked and depressed below the surrounding surface without fully separating, creating an area of altered relief on struck coins. The combination of shattered die characteristics with a retained interior break documents a die in severe distress that was likely pulled from service shortly after these specimens were struck. The 2007 Philadelphia Mint produced approximately 1.04 billion Roosevelt Dimes, an output that demanded high-speed press operations and rapid die replacement cycles. Dies that reach the shattered state have typically far exceeded their intended service life, making shattered die specimens inherently scarce relative to the total mintage of the date. John R. Sinnock's Roosevelt portrait, entering its sixty-first year of production in 2007, had become the longest-running active dime design in U.S. history.
