Description

Documented by Trail Dies, the 2007D(WY)-25DER-002T Trail Die Reverse appears on the 2007-D Wyoming State Quarter — one of five state reverse designs issued that year under the 50 State Quarters Program (1999-2008). This variety has been recorded at die Stage D in very late die state, where the obverse shows a small die crack in the lower part of Washington's queue (ponytail) and the reverse displays a strong flow line running from the middle of the W in WYOMING to the rim. The very late die state designation indicates this working die was in production for an extended period before retirement, accumulating wear indicators including the obverse die crack and reverse flow line that help fingerprint this specific die. Trail die varieties arise when an incompletely hubbed die enters service, producing faint secondary design impressions that trail away from the primary fully-formed elements. The Wyoming State Quarter reverse, designed by Norman E. Nemeth, depicts a bucking horse and rider with the inscription "The Equality State" and the year of statehood. Struck at the Denver Mint on copper-nickel clad planchets weighing 5.67 grams with a 24.26 mm diameter, this quarter was produced in large quantities as part of one of the most popular collecting programs in United States Mint history. The strong flow line from W to the rim on the reverse provides an especially useful attribution marker, as flow lines in late die state are directional indicators of metal movement that create distinctive patterns unique to each working die.
