Description

This trail die obverse variety was identified on the 2006 Philadelphia Mint Nebraska State Quarter. Unlike most trail die varieties cataloged on Lincoln cents, this trail die occurs on the obverse, affecting the Washington portrait side rather than the state reverse. Trail dies result from lateral die movement during striking, leaving elongated traces of design elements offset from intended positions. The documented die state is Stage B, placing both obverse and reverse at mid-die state. The obverse shows a die chip in the queue above the A of DOLLAR, along with three small die dots to the left of the designer's initials on Washington's throat. No notable reverse markers were observed. The Nebraska State Quarter features Chimney Rock on the reverse, an Oregon Trail landmark that guided westward emigrants across the Great Plains. Trail die obverse varieties on state quarters are less commonly cataloged than those on Lincoln cents, making this an unusual entry in the trail die catalog. The die chip in the queue and three die dots near the designer's initials serve as reliable attribution markers.

Die Markers

  • Stage "B", obverse is MDS – die chip in the queue above the A of DOLLAR. Three small die dots to the left of the designer's initials on Washington's throat.
  • Reverse is MDS – none noted.
