Attributed by Edward Fletcher, Jr. on a satin finish special strike, this Class VIII doubled die obverse on the 2005 Philadelphia "Ocean in View" Jefferson Nickel displays tilted hub doubling on IN GOD WE TRUST, LIBERTY, and the date. Class VIII doubling results from a tilted hub during the die-making process, producing a spread that shifts directionally across the design rather than radiating uniformly. Close examination reveals the doubling across all three inscription areas, with the affected text showing displacement consistent with a single angular misalignment of the hub. The primary obverse die marker is a die gouge extending from the upper left side of the L in LIBERTY, while no significant reverse markers have been noted. Satin finish coins were special strikes produced exclusively for 2005-2010 uncirculated mint sets, featuring a distinctive matte-like surface created by burnishing the planchets before striking — a texture that differs markedly from both standard business strikes and mirror-finish proofs. The "Ocean in View" design is part of the 2005 Westward Journey nickel series, depicting the Pacific Ocean vista that greeted the Lewis and Clark expedition. Cross-referenced as Wexler Variety ID: 2005 P WDDO-024 Satin Finish Ocean in View.
