2005 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-002

Description

Displaying Class VIII tilted hub doubling on three obverse elements — IN GOD WE TRUST, LIBERTY, and the date — WDDO-002 on the 2005-P Satin Finish "Ocean in View" Jefferson Nickel carries both Wexler and CONECA cross-references (Wexler 2005 P WDDO-002 Satin Finish Ocean in View; CONECA OIV Reverse 1-O-VIII). Class VIII doubling results from a tilted hub impression where one edge of the hub was angled relative to the die face, creating a spread that varies in intensity across the design depending on distance from the tilt axis — elements closer to the pivot edge show minimal displacement while elements farther from it show maximum spread. The obverse die carries a specific marker: a small die dot in the field to the upper right of the tip of Jefferson's nose, providing an independent attribution checkpoint beyond the doubling itself. Kenneth Russell documented this variety. Of particular note, this obverse die was paired with a reverse die that is itself a doubled die, listed as 2005 P OIV 5¢ WDDR-003 — creating a combination variety where both sides of the coin carry hub doubling from their respective dies, a pairing that significantly enhances collector interest. The 2005 "Ocean in View" reverse, designed by Joe Fitzgerald and sculpted by Donna Weaver, depicts the view Captain William Clark and the Corps of Discovery encountered upon reaching the Pacific Ocean in November 1805, with Clark's journal entry inscription. This satin finish specimen (distinguished from business strikes by its matte-like surface produced using specially treated dies) was available exclusively through 2005 mint sets. Struck in standard copper-nickel composition (5.00 grams, 21.21 mm diameter), the Class VIII tilted hub doubling on IN GOD WE TRUST, LIBERTY, and the date is most efficiently confirmed by examining the die dot near Jefferson's nose first, then assessing the spread intensity gradient across the three affected text elements.
